JULIET VAN OTTEREN
PRIVATE PORTRAIT COMMISSIONS

Creating a work of art involving people is a collaborative effort. Before doing any work with the camera, Juliet first talks to her clients to better understand their desires. The length of the shoot depends on a number of variables including the client’s needs and availability. Busy executives and professionals appreciate her ability to work extremely fast if the conditions demand it. When the National Portrait Gallery in England asked Juliet to photograph Professor Stephen Hawking she was told by his P.A. that due to Prof. Hawking’s busy schedule she would only have fifteen minutes to photograph him. Stephen Hawking said of the resulting photograph, "of all the many photographs that have been taken of me, Juliet van Otteren’s is by far my favorite.

Many clients have told Juliet that her photographs of them are so extraordinary that they feel as if they are seeing things about themselves that they had never known existed. Susan Orleans described her photograph as “A startling image, a little haunting and very intriguing, that has made me think about who I am and how I appear to the world.

It is Juliet’s intuition that permits her to “know the right moment before that moment arrives” freezing on film that “moment”. This gift combined with the eye of an artist allows her to capture something unique and create a dramatic piece of art out of every sitting. Joyce Carol Oates describes her photography as “a work of surpassing beauty and mystery."

Juliet is easy to work with because she loves people and exudes a joie de vivre that becomes contagious. Lady Bronwen Astor says “Juliet is not only fun to work with, but she also captures the portrait of the inner self.”

Juliet has been creating art and photographing people for over twenty years. She works with both people and animals and is exceptionally talented at recording the dynamics of couples or several subjects interacting with their loved ones, whether human or animal. Her work with horses is well known and her best selling book “Heart of the Horse” was published by Barnes and Noble in 2004.
